What was announced
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed Hill in the Republican primary for Georgia governor in the second week of May 2018. Ballotpedia dates the endorsement May 7; the campaign's post at this address is dated May 8, the same day the AJC reported it. In the AJC's account, Cruz called Hill a "conservative of conviction," and the paper expected Cruz to feature in Hill's campaign mail and possibly to visit Georgia later in the month.
What else happened that week
The AJC paired the news with a setback for Hill on gun rights. The same week GeorgiaCarry.org endorsed Brian Kemp and said it would "strongly oppose" Hill, citing his comments after the Parkland shooting about the minimum age to buy rifles and his past handling of gun bills in the state Senate. The NRA had endorsed Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle several weeks earlier.
Ballotpedia's endorsement list for the race shows Cruz as Hill's most prominent national backer, alongside state Reps. Sam Teasley, Michael Caldwell and Wes Cantrell. Cagle's list included former U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss and the NRA; Kemp's included former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr.
How it turned out
Hill finished third in the May 22 primary with 18.3 percent, behind Cagle (39.0 percent) and Kemp (25.5 percent). He endorsed Kemp before the July 24 runoff. See the elections page for the full results.
