What was announced
On April 24, 2018 the campaign publicized an "A" rating from the NRA. The AJC reported that the campaign hoped the grade would quiet questions about his record and blunt the NRA's earlier endorsement of Casey Cagle.
Why it mattered
At a February 2018 forum, days after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, Hill had said the minimum age to buy certain semiautomatic rifles should match the pistol age of 21. He then said he had misspoken and that he supported 18 as the minimum for all firearms. Rivals seized on the remark. Around the same time businessman Clay Tippins ran an ad likening Hill to Benedict Arnold. Republican leaders, including U.S. Rep. Jody Hice, criticized that ad as an unfair attack on a combat veteran (AJC).
Wikipedia notes that the NRA Political Victory Fund had given Hill several "C" ratings while he was a state senator.
What followed
Two weeks later GeorgiaCarry.org said it would oppose Hill, pointing to the age comments and to a 2014 church-carry bill it said he had helped weaken. His campaign replied that he had voted for every pro-Second Amendment bill in his five Senate years and cited the NRA rating (11Alive). Hill finished third in the May 22 primary. The gun debate is summarized on the positions page.
