Where the district has been
Georgia redraws its legislative maps after each census, and sometimes in between when courts require it. District 6 has been through three distinct shapes in the period this site covers.
| Period | Territory (as described by the sources) |
|---|---|
| 2003 to 2012 | Cobb County, including parts of Marietta and Smyrna (Wikipedia) |
| 2013 to 2022 | Smyrna and Vinings in southern Cobb, then east through Sandy Springs into Buckhead (Patch, 2011; Rough Draft Atlanta, 2017) |
| 2023 to 2024 | An Atlanta-area district drawn after the 2020 census; represented by Democrat Jason Esteves after the 2022 election (Ballotpedia) |
| Since January 2025 | Coweta and Heard counties and the southern part of Carroll County, in west Georgia (Wikipedia; Ballotpedia) |
The 2011 map turned the old Cobb-based seat into a split suburban district. Patch reported at the time that observers expected the race for it to be among the most expensive legislative contests in the state. Rough Draft Atlanta later noted that it had been a Cobb-centered Democratic seat until the 2011 lines added Buckhead and Sandy Springs.
The current lines come from remedial maps the General Assembly passed in a special session in December 2023, after a federal court ordered Georgia to redraw its legislative districts. Gov. Brian Kemp signed them on December 8, 2023, and they were first used in the 2024 elections (Ballotpedia).
